Ignoring the isolation of Qatar initiated by Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, French President Emmanuel Macron arrived the Al-Udeid Air Base on Thursday for a one-day visit. American and French troops who are stationed at the base greeted Macron who then proceeded to meetings and later a scheduled visit with the emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani. The boycott that began in June has showed no signs of abating. The initiators of the ban accuse the Qataris of supporting terrorism, a charge vehemently denied in Doha but generally believed to be the case. Hamas, for instance, has been a long-time recipient of Qatari largesse. A meeting of the Gulf Cooperation Council had been scheduled to be held in Doha, but plans fell apart because of the boycott.
