The failure by the Saudi-led coalition to defeat the Iranian-backed Shiite Houthis in Yemen is the subject of a review by the Trump administration with an eye toward increasing the military support it needs to do the job. Until now, American support has consisted of sharing intelligence and facilitating mid-air fueling of Saudi war planes. But it is now expected that the Trump administration will provide new forms of lethal aid stopping short of sending actual combat forces. Defense Secretary James Mattis characterized the Iranian intent as the creation of a Houthi militia fashioned along the lines of Lebanon-based Hizbullah. He said the US will help “reinforce Saudi Arabia’s resistance to Iran’s mischief.”
