You Want Western Values? Then Cut the Hypocrisy

Washington so frequently looks at Middle Eastern leaders, in particular the late Yassir Arafat, and accuses them of double speak. “He says one thing to us in English and something completely different to his own people in Arabic,†is the basic refrain. That may be true, but right now, the objections on Capitol Hill to DP World smack of the same hypocrisy. When American politicians and businesspeople address audiences the world over, their basic mantra is democracy,.....

Islamism has made impressive inroads into Middle Eastern democracies, but in some parts of the region "political Islam" may prove to be more political than Islamic. The stunning victory of Hamas in the Palestinian elections is a good example. To the outsider Hamas is all about fundamentalism in Islam and rejection of Israel. The frequent street demonstrations in Gaza do not look particularly dissimilar to those of Tehran. Hamas put more women candidates on its national list.....

Yousef lets anyone who will listen know that “God is great,” as he weaves through the streets of ‘Azariyya in the West Bank in a Hamas motorcade celebrating the party’s election victory. “That’s my mosque,” he says with considerable pride. The minaret dominates the skyline. It is festooned with Hamas posters and flags. To the outsider Hamas is all about fundamentalism in Islam and rejection of Israel. The frequent street demonstrations in.....

“We’re not making any comment for the time being,” an Israeli bureaucrat told me this morning. At the same time, my colleague Felice Friedson was receiving the same response from a United States official at the Department of State. It seems rather predictable that this would be the response from two capitals that have proved themselves completely unprepared for a Hamas victory in the Palestinian parliamentary elections. I am sitting at the typewriter, ahead of the announcement of the.....

Too Experienced?
by David Zev Harris on
Sunday, January 15, 2006

When we in the media speak of elderly rulers and politicians we refer to them as being “experienced.” It is our way of beating about the ageism bush. What we are trying to say is that an old man, or woman, but usually a man, is at the helm. The question is whether all those of pensionable age are fit enough to be leaders of people. As Kuwaitis and Emeratis have been discovering this week,.....

The famed British Broadcasting Corporation has announced it is launching a $35-million-per-year television channel in Arabic. It will be the Beeb’s first televisual foray into foreign languages. For decades Auntie (as the BBC is affectionately known in the UK) has broadcast in dozens of languages via its international radio operation the World Service. The organization has admitted it is cutting around 10 foreign-language radio services in order to fund the Arabic effort. The.....

Age Matters
by David Zev Harris on

To many of us, the approach of middle or old age is something of a burden, a fear of entering the unknown, the onset of a substantial midriff, the threat of heart disease and the prospect of the Grim Reaper. Yet throughout the Middle East aging signifies leadership. While the West is going through a phase of appointing younger men (and occasionally women) to the top job a nation has to offer, the Orient retains those slots.....

Qatar is hosting the 2006 Asian Games (All photos: G.F. Photos)[Doha, Qatar] – Did you know that in the tiny Gulf state Qatar gasoline is cheaper than mineral water and that the local pet is neither the cat nor the dog but rather the falcon? Did you know that in November the world's most modern sports stadium will be opened in the country's capital Doha with a huge concert performed by Madonna? Did you know.....

[Athens, Greece] -- Being Greek is not something most people wake up in the morning and say they want to achieve by the day's end. Indeed, other than in parts of Brooklyn, New York, and other Greek enclaves around the world, the closest most of us get to Athens is watching My Big Fat Greek Wedding. So what happens when you wake up each morning to remember that you are Greek? That happens to 10.6 million people every day.However,.....

Israelis and Jews the world over expressed their shock and outrage earlier this week, when they heard of the torching of several abandoned synagogues in the Gaza Strip. Television pictures showed Palestinian youths setting fire to the places of worship just minutes after the last Israeli soldiers withdrew from the area. These wanton acts of vandalism were clearly the last thing the Palestinian Authority wanted to see, especially given the fact that the Western world was closely.....
