Once again, Palestinian blood is being spilt by Palestinians causing deaths and injuries. Hearts and chests are filled with anger, provocation and congestion, and all the Palestinians feel the pain and rupture for what is taking place, because we all believe that Palestinian blood is a red line and a taboo that shouldn't be crossed, and that it's repercussions and results can't be underestimated. We know that the Palestinian situation in at boiling point, that it can explode.....

| Is Israel an Apartheid State? |
by Geoffrey Smith on
Tuesday, May 23, 2006
|
A recent article in the Guardian newspaper alleged that Israel is an apartheid state. This same accusation is being repeated this weekend at a demonstration in London. It is repeated in a motion to be debated at the Annual Meeting of a University Trade Union next week. If something is repeated often enough you begin to think it must be true. That was the basic principle of Goebbels in the Nazi attacks he mounted against the Jewish.....

| National Dialogue – Yes, but it should be Productive |
by Mohammed Shaker Abdallah on
Tuesday, May 23, 2006
|
The invitation which was called for by President Mahmoud ‘Abbas to a Palestinian national dialogue is considered by all standards a positive development that must be put to use very seriously, in order to contain the repercussions of the current internal situation in Palestine, to study the mechanisms capable of returning the connection with the international community, and to gain their trust and support. The reality that must be stressed in this regard is that there won't.....

|
Back in July 2004, the 216th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of the USA (PCUSA) resolved to consider divesting the church's assets from American firms allegedly profitting from the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory. The resolution provoked angry reactions both within and and outside the church. Opinion polls showed that a decisive majority of church members opposed the move. With the 217th General Assembly due in June 2006, the battle is heating up between supporters and opponents.....

| New Actions in Iran Bode Ill for Baha'is and the World at Large. |
by Bani Dugal on
Tuesday, May 23, 2006
|
Respect for human rights is a clear indication of a nation's commitment to the rule of law, to humanitarian principles, and to honesty in its public affairs. And there is no better measure of Iran's genuine commitment to human rights than the way it treats its largest religious minority, the 300,000-member Baha'i community of Iran, who are by their religious principles committed to nonviolence and noninvolvement in politics.Unfortunately, since 1979, when the Islamic Republic of Iran was established,.....

by The Media Line Staff on
Tuesday, May 23, 2006
|
Little is known about the conditions and date of the arrest of Libyan journalist Abdullah Ali Al-Sanussi Al-Darrat, and sources differ. Some say it was in 1973, others say it was in 1974 or 1975. If he is still alive, he would be the oldest prisoner in the world, but nobody knows where he is incarcerated. The Al-Darrat case is indicative of the fate of any prisoner of conscience who has been forgotten by world opinion. In his.....

|
[Responding to "Honor Killings", Ellen R. Sheeley shares with The Media Line the empirical research she has carried out in Jordan. -- Ed.]Mohammad Ben Hussein writes that, "Meanwhile, local human rights groups have been facing strenuous challenges in their uphill battle to put an end to the killings. "The society looks at the criminal with sympathy. They see them as victims," says Manal Asha of Jordan's Institute for Women."That is certainly the conventional wisdom. However, recent empirical.....

| Toward activating the Arab peace initiative |
by Mohammed Shaker Abdallah on
Tuesday, May 23, 2006
|
The Arab peace initiative, adopted by the Beirut Arab summit of 2002, and based on a vision attributed to the then Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz - that initiative has been shelved ever since the Israeli government of Ariel Sharon rejected it immediately after its emergence. It seems now that the Hamas' ascension to power has revived that plan and awakened it from its slumber - at least from the Arabs' perspective, looking for a.....

| A treasury... full of promises and pledges! |
by Mohammed Shaker Abdallah on
Tuesday, May 23, 2006
|
The Israeli and international threats to cut off financial support to any Hamas -led Palestinian government was neither new nor surprising - for immediately after the Hamas victory in the Palestinian legislative elections, the Israeli government temporarily suspended transferring the tax revenues which it collects on behalf of the Palestinian Authority. Threats were also issued then by US administration and EU to stop the direct assistance to the PA.At that time, nearly three month ago, the head.....

| When violence increases, where is hope? |
by Geoffrey Smith on
Tuesday, May 23, 2006
|
The week before Easter there were over 70 specific terrorist threats reported to Israeli security. Only days earlier, a dramatic chase by helicopter and police cars stopped a van on the road from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv with a bomb inside. It was probably inevitable that sometime a bomber would get through the security net. It happened on Easter Monday. Nine Israelis in addition to the bomber died in a massive explosion in downtown Tel Aviv. For.....
